Feng Shui.

The ancient Chinese belief that our external surroundings affect our inner well-being, energy, or Chi.

I have a client who practices Feng Shui and EVERYTIME I clean her windows she breathes a deep sigh of relief (Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh) and comments on how much better she feels.

The clouds have parted.
The dirt has been removed.
Vision has been restored.

I have another client, a store front owner, whose customers commented on how much better it felt in the store after I cleaned the windows. Little did they know they were dealing with Feng Shui.

Little did I know that my window cleaning service was about Feng Shui.

People move to Park City, or the mountainous West, to enjoy the panoramic views. They often buy homes with many large view windows to take it all in. And when grime obstructs their peaceful view, it doesn’t feel right.

[Our inner peace shouldn't be dependent upon clean windows, but debris on the glass can be unsettling.]

I have several clients who have me clean their windows on a monthly basis. They bought that home in order to enjoy the views so I swing by often to help them achieve that.

Why should I have my windows cleaned more than once-a-year?

I recently was asked this question, “Why should I have my windows cleaned more than once-a-year?” Here are several good reasons:

Air born debris will collect enough to warrant another cleaning (why are you having them cleaned at all?)
Bird droppings and smears
Mud storms – wind and rain can wreak havoc on clean windows in the Park City, UT area. Summer can be one of the worst times we experience storms throwing mud onto windows
Children and pets are attracted to windows like moths to the flame and leave their greasy little love messages for us to enjoy
Most of us park our grill too close to our windows and the smoke and wind carries the grease onto the windows leaving lots of sticky spots all over
Paint or stain drips (Don’t hire a painter who isn’t willing to cover the windows entirely. Some painters will clean up the paint on windows carelessly and scratch the glass. Some painters won’t do anything to protect the windows and window cleaners are left to clean up after their mess.)
Nearby construction will often generate an excessive amount of dirt and dust that will find it’s way onto your once-clean windows

How often should I have my windows cleaned?

Preference.

Window cleaning frequency is all about preference. I have some clients who want their view windows (not all their windows) cleaned once-a-month. Many of my clients prefer to have their outside windows cleaned twice a year, spring and fall. And a third group of clients want windows cleaned once-a-year.

Interior windows should be cleaned once-a-year. Bugs will leave behind tiny spots typically along the top edge of high windows. Dust will accumulate on window surfaces in varying degrees depending on occupancy, candle usage, fireplaces, wood stoves, etc. Spiders will often leave webs in the upper corners of window frames too. Bugs, dust, and spiders don’t account for the stray hand prints and odd splatters and pet noses that leave smears on lower windows too.

I wash my own exterior windows at least three times a year. Storms happen all year long and despite our best efforts to time window cleaning they will inevitably fall prey to a ‘dirty’ storm. Not all storms are ‘dirty’; some storms have little wind and the air happens to have little debris in it and the rain drops are like a gentle rinse on the windows. Other storms push dust and dirt right up on the windows and wreak havoc on our once, clean view. Birds can drop bombs, hit a window and leave a smear, or even fight with themselves in the reflection and make a terrible mess. Misplaced grills will leave grease all over nearby windows. You get the idea – our views get disturbed and our windows need attention.

Consider a window treatment like 3 Star Barrier. The surface of glass deteriorates over time, especially in high altitude where the sun’s energy is more powerful. As a result, the glass becomes more porous and collects more minerals than it might shed. A surface treatment will help the glass rinse and shed water more efficiently, thus improving the clarity of your view. A window treatment is really a must in high altitude if you want to preserve the integrity of your windows.

What to do about birds?

What do I do to stop birds from crashing, pecking windows?

Decrease the reflectivity of your windows:
1. Pull down your shades: white curtains or blinds can make it difficult for birds to see their reflections.
2. Put the screens in operable windows to make them less reflective.
3. Consider soaping your windows for a couple of weeks during the nesting season.
4. Break up the reflection by hanging something, placing decorative window films, or using 1-inch-wide tape or ribbon to create vertical stripes every four inches on the outside of your windows.
5. Move houseplants away from the glass and close curtains over windows and sliding glass doors whenever possible.
Create a physical barrier:
1. Build a net frame to act as a barricade by mounting fine-mesh netting (available at garden centers or hardware stores) in a rigid frame, using shelf brackets to hold the frame a couple of inches away from the window.
2. Install indoor-outdoor blinds on the outside of your windows.
3. Adhesive-backed cut-out silhouettes of hawks or falcons in flight to attach to the outer surfaces of reflective glass are sold in virtually all stores catering to naturalists and birders. In fact, any shape will work. The non-reflective cutout helps the birds focus on the glass and, knowing it’s there, avoid it.
4. If you’re a bird watcher and feed birds, consider moving your feeders further away from windows.
While these measures won’t guarantee Cardinals and Robins will stop pecking and crashing into your windows, they may minimize the behavior. This behavior is at its peak during the nesting season. For the most part, this behavior should decrease as soon as the young leave the nest. (care of www.wild-bird-watching.com)

Are sprinklers facing your windows?

In the spring when the sprinklers get turned back on, be sure to check where each sprinkler head is spraying to insure that your windows aren’t getting hit. Windows that get hit constantly by sprinklers and then have those minerals get baked on by the high altitude sunshine will quickly deteriate and develop a layer of water stain. Water stain that stays on for months on end will be difficult, if not impossible to remove. 0000 steel wool, lime away, vinegar, and razor blades are some of the tools and products I use to removed water stain build up. There are other toxic chemicals that are much stronger and can have more significant results on water stain, but I avoid the use of chemicals for environmental and health reasons.

Are you having your house painted?

If you are going to have the exterior of your house painted or stained, talk to your painter about how the windows will be protected and cleaned up after the job. The windows are often overlooked in the painting/staining process; consider factoring in a window cleaning into the process.

Is your grill under your window?

Often times clients place their grill right under a window. This will cover your window in grease and I’ll need to scrap the grease off with a razor blade. Consider moving your grill away from the house, which is a fire precaution too.

When is the best time of year to have your windows cleaned?

Customers often ask me when is the best time of year to have their windows cleaned. Winter is difficult since the air temperature dips below freezing, but can be done on sunny days. Storms happen all year round. Some people think that the spring storms are worse, but I think summer and fall storms blow more dirt onto windows than spring storms. Weather happens all year round. Watch the weather and attempt to schedule your window cleanings after storms have passed and when you know there will be a stretch of clear skies. Storms that don’t kick up dirt and plaster your windows often are harmless to your clean windows too.

Windows Are Porous

Windows are porous. When windows are new and high quality, they feel smooth and shed water and dirt easier. As windows age and are exposed to the strong effects of high altitude sunlight they deteriorate and become more porous and hold more water stain and dirt. There exist products, like 3 star barrier, that can restore the ‘smoothness’ of the glass.
